My Progress Report

Am I the coolest guy on the planet?

Home

Are we there yet?

This page is basically the timeline of what I've done here at CoolestGuyOnThePlanet.org, dating my efforts to rank for the phrase "coolest guy on the planet" at Google. Hopefully I'll be able to post a big "I'm #1!" here someday soon.

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

Just a quick update to say that it's been almost 3 months and this site is still ranked #1 in Google for "coolest guy on the planet".

Sunday, September 2nd, 2007

TODAY I AM #1 FOR COOLEST GUY ON THE PLANET.
It's a dice game in Google, though, so let's see if it lasts!

Tuesday, July 11th, 2007

The site is now #2! Look out Brad... ;)

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

Just got back from an 11 day vacation to find that my site is now ranked #3 for "coolest guy on the planet" and #4 for "the coolest guy on the planet" in Google. Very exciting!

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

Today the site is at #5.

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

Today I am the 6th coolest guy on the planet, according to Google. The squidoo lens, Blogger blog and Wordpress blog I created are all indexed in Google (two days later), as are all of the Digg story pages I used to get them crawled and index in the first place.

Monday, June 4th, 2007

After a little fluctuation, my site dropped to #10 and then moved back to #8 for its primary keywords, "coolest guy on the planet". However, I rank #1 for "coolestguyontheplanet" (the same query with no spaces). Not what I was going for, but it's interesting just the same.

Also, today I created a Blogger blog and a Squidoo lens both linked to this site with my keywords. I submitted those sites to Reddit, Digg and del.icio.us in order to get Google to index them and count the links.

I also submitted the site directly to Digg, del.icio.us and Reddit, and created a Wordpress blog and did the same (Digg/Reddit/del.icio.us).

This should give some new one-way links to my site.

Wednesday, May 23st, 2007

Today I submitted my site to a large number of directories.

Monday, May 21st, 2007

I've risen to #8 on Google for coolest guy on the planet. I'm assuming it's because the articles I had written are starting to make their way to a variety of web sites. I'm seeing 5 or 10 copies of each of the articles on other sites.

I noticed in my server logs that my site has gotten quite a number of visitors from this DigitalPoint forum thread. It's mostly people with SEO experience saying that this site is not of value to anyone except beginners (which is a fact that I've never tried to hide).

Regardless, though, all advertisement is good advertisement, and the thread is bringing visitors!

I had quite a hassle from one of need-an-article.com's writers who insisted that ghost writers don't do the research on the articles they write. She told me that I have to do the research myself. Ha! Why pay a ghost writer if I'm going to have to do my own research?

Anyway, after all of that hassle, I finally got the 5 articles I had them write and submitted four of them to ArticleCity.com and GoArticles.com (one was too short and of low quality).

ArticleCity doesn't allow hyperlinked text, so those were just straight url links. GoArticles does allow hyperlinked text, so I used "coolest guy on the planet" for two of the article bios and "search engine optimzation" for the other two.

I also added a new article on how I got such a nice description for my site in Google's results. It's easy to get a nice, clean description in Google if you know how. Read the article to find out how it's done.

Since I added a new page, and made a few small updates to a couple of other pages, I updated my sitemap XML file and resubmitted the sitemap to Google.

It's important that Google see you're adding fresh content on a regular basis. Regularly updated sites will hold their rankings better than sites Google sees are "stale."

Finally, I also added AdSense to the index page to see if I can generate a little revenue from this site. I tried adding it to the other content pages, but for some reason Google thought they were all about hairstyles and toupees! Weird.

My brother emailed me today to tell me that CoolestGuyOnThePlanet.org now ranks #9 in Google for, of course, "coolest guy on the planet"!

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

Today I built the entire site, generated the site map file and submitted it to Google, and submitted the site itself to Google.

I also submitted the site to this DMOZ category.

I also submitted to 5 directories with at least a PR4 home page using the link-text "Coolest Guy On The Planet", 3 PR4+ directories using "Rank in Google" and 2 using "Search Engine Optimization". I used SEO Elite to find the directories.

Within a couple of hours of submitting my site map XML, Googlebot has already crawled the site.

I also hired Need-An-Article to write 5 SEO articles and two Press Releases for me to submit to the various article and PR submission sites using SEO Elite.

I added a link to the resources page of my blog pointing to the home page with the text Coolest Guy on the Planet.
